The Zeiss Planetarium in Jena is the world’s oldest existing planetarium.

It opened on July 18, 1926. The Zeiss Planetarium is a projection planetarium in which the fixed stars and the planets are projected onto the inner surface of a white cupola. The Ernst-Abbe Foundation owns and operates the planetarium.

Since October 17, 2006 the Planetarium in Jena is the first planetarium in Europe which is equipped with an all-dome laser image projection which was supplied by the Carl Zeiss GmbH in Jena. The dome has a 23 metre diameter and a projection surface of 1000 sqm. More than 130.000 visitors come to this planetarium every year.
